Our Holistic Approach
In the debate of architecture as art or science, we know this to be true: overseeing every aspect of building and design demands a capacity to keep vision in the forefront while staying grounded in the details. Drawing on our complete scope of services and extensive experience, we manage the research, technology and costs of each project to find a solution for our clients and collaborators in the most efficient, inspired, and responsible way imaginable.
Is it Art or Science? We deliver on both.
Ground Up
There’s really no such thing as a blank slate. There is always a framework to consider: the landscape, architectural context, infrastructure … A ground up project requires intensive planning with expert architects in order to create a beautiful building that works, delights, and endures.
Renovation
Renovation is an act of transformation – and sometimes right before your very eyes. The ability to deal with complex projects where a building remains open and operating during major construction demands sensitivity and acumen. Access, security, proper ventilation and privacy are just a few of the issues requiring attention when building renovation plans are in progress.
We approach renovation with respect for the building’s history and an understanding of building systems in order to determine what is still useful and what needs to be replaced. To adapt an existing structure while maintaining its historical integrity requires tremendous wisdom and the utmost dedication to sustainable design.
Planning
We plan for people. We want always to think about the user, whether approaching a site from a few thousand feet away, or sitting in place ready to work or get a bite to eat, or socializing with friends and colleagues. It takes this “people perspective” in order to simultaneously manage the comprehensive scope and smallest details; incorporating site development, interior design, the landscape and building as key parts of the planning puzzle that must fit together to support the experience our client wants to achieve.
Interiors
In the planning process, there is no boundary between interior design and architecture. A building is the envelope; the first view of what is to unfold. We don't draw that line between the exterior and interior but rather choose to keep it fluid, bringing the outside in, and the inside out. Our teams are cross-trained to understand this and bring this vision to bear on each and every project we conceive.
Historic Renovation
The assignment is most often quite complex. To blend old and new or to adapt for reuse requires an extensive knowledge of building methods and traditions, a familiarity with the Secretary of the Interior Standards, an affinity for historical context and the appetite for vigorous research.
Throughout, the focus remains on preserving and transforming our community's architectural treasures.
