Graffiti, a premier promotional apparel maker, occupied a dated storefront in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood for decades. To bring heightened visibility to the brand and establish themselves as active members of the community, Graffiti looked to refresh their façade to better reflect their contemporary aesthetic and identity. The refresh also aimed to promote their Cleveland-proud headwear brand, Legend, as an up-and-coming business and attract visitors to their showroom.
A new perforated metal skin was designed to clad the brick and panel façade while addressing the limitations of its existing conditions. Challenges included requirements for a shallow depth due to property line restrictions and the inability to touch the city-owned sidewalk. Durable 4’ wide perforated metal panels were affixed to custom tubular aluminum frames secured to the building’s exterior with tamper resistant fasteners. Rather than printing color directly to metal, a layered approach created the appearance of pixels behind the perforated pattern, revealing controlled color from the inner skin. A creative application of vinyl car wrap and ACM panel appears to change color based on dynamic daylighting conditions. Inspired by the manufacturing industry itself, the resulting skin is eye-catching and impactful.
The highly geometric, multicolored façade created a distinct presence in Cleveland’s business district and has boosted interest in the manufacturer and their brand. The project minimized costs, disruption to daily operations, and impact to the existing structure all while successfully creating a bold new image for the client’s business.
