The Tappan Receives an Honorable Mention

Last Friday, The Tappan was awarded an Honorable Mention at the AIA Cleveland Design Awards. Submissions were reviewed by jurors Deborah Berke, FAIA, LEED AP, Dean of The Yale School of Architecture and Partner at Deborah Berke Partners, and Noah Bilken, AIA, LEED AP also a Partner at the firm.

They commented the project is “a thoughtful urban infill project with a courtyard to foster community within the building. Nicely articulated materiality gives the building a strong street presence.” We thank the jurors and AIA Cleveland for this distinguished recognition!

The Tappan Earns a Merit Award from AIA Ohio

The new design-forward mid-rise building in Tremont earned a Merit Award from AIA Ohio, which was revealed at the virtual ceremony last week. Juror Anne Schopf, FAIA, Design Partner at Mahlum Architects, commented on the smart planning strategy to pull-back and celebrate the urban corner. She expressed there is a pleasing separation and rhythm of openings – and applauded against overpacking the building with units, which would have made the pattern impossible. Congratulations to our project team, our collaborators, and our client, Sustainable Community Associates, for bringing this inspiring Opportunity Zone project to life. Former Mall Site Envisioned as an Amenity-Rich Residential Community

Built in 1966, Richmond Mall was once the largest enclosed shopping mall in Ohio. With the complete purchase of the now-closed mall, the vision for Belle Oaks, a vibrant walkable mixed-use development, moves forward. We have worked closely with DealPoint Merrill to design an amenity-rich destination with a walkable street grid, green space, restaurants, an outdoor community entertainment venue, grocery, retail stores, and cinema. Construction of the $200 million project is anticipated to begin in 2022.

Bialosky Celebrates 70 Years of Design

In 1946 Jack Alan Bialosky, Sr. returned home from World War II having served in the Navy. He attended the Yale School of Architecture which exposed him to Frank Lloyd Wright, Eliel Saarinen, and Louis Kahn, before earning his degree in 1949. Exuberance in a post-WWII America, combined with confidence in his own ability, led Jack Sr. to open his own practice in his Shaker Square apartment in 1951.

He is remembered as a daring architect, a brilliant painter, and a great storyteller. He prioritized family above all else, which continues to be a tenet of our firm. We would not be together if not for him.
