For 50 years, the May Dugan Center has been a lifeline to the community—an essential private social service organization serving thousands of people annually through diverse programs and nonprofit partners, all housed in a building constructed in 1975. Over the past decade, the center has experienced a dramatic surge in visitors, while the needs of those seeking help have grown increasingly complex. This amazing organization needed its facility to evolve alongside the communities it serves.
The center partnered with Bialosky to transform the aging building through comprehensive interior and exterior renovations that would enable them to meet expanding community needs.
The project reconfigures programming and office spaces to establish clear circulation pathways that prioritize safety through maintained sightlines while connecting department staff to foster collaboration and resource sharing. Complete upgrades to HVAC, electrical, and technology systems modernize the 50-year-old facility, creating an energy-efficient, healthy environment worthy of the critical work happening within its walls.
Exterior renovations to parking areas and public walkways reimagine the entrance as a welcoming beacon— embracing community members as they arrive seeking support. A thoughtfully designed addition expands the center's programming capacity, providing a large gathering space where the community can convene and connect.
Throughout the design, trauma-informed principles guide every decision. Warm yet durable materials and a naturally inspired color palette create a soothing, supportive environment for both staff and the vulnerable populations they serve. This transformation ensures this vital social service organization can continue adapting to community needs for the next 50 years.
