The Westlake Porter Public Library engaged Bialosky to re-imagine the aging facility as a hub for creativity and community activity, expanding services through targeted improvements that enhance functionality beyond the building walls.
Through comprehensive community engagement sessions, including interactive open houses and interviews, the project developed a multi-phased master plan framework that balances traditional services with modern programming responding directly to patron input. The master plan reconceptualizes the facility to incorporate enhanced maker spaces, flexible common spaces, outdoor areas, and functional office spaces conducive to more efficient work-staff flow.
Phase 1 delivered a variety of study areas and group meeting rooms, an exterior program pavilion with event lawn for the library’s extensive outdoor programming, and a dedicated maker space.
Phase 2, now complete, created an engaging technology-enabled teen area, transformed the circulation work area to accommodate a new automated material handling system, and opened the second floor for expanded public use.
The comprehensive master plan establishes a roadmap that allows the library to maximize space for existing and expanded programming, showcase its robust physical collection, and comfortably meet the evolving needs of the Westlake community through meaningful connections between building and landscape that respond directly to community priorities.
