The project consolidates two outdated buildings—together totaling 90,000 square feet—into a single 65,000-square-foot complex, with one 48,000-square-foot structure fully renovated while the other was removed to make way for a 17,000-square-foot addition. This consolidation creates a cohesive hub that unites the previously separated Physics and Geoscience departments, fostering collaboration and efficiency.

The 75-year-old existing structure required comprehensive transformation to serve as a state-of-the-art science facility, with its exterior carefully restored to meet contemporary performance standards while preserving institutional character. Interiors were rebuilt to create specialized laboratories for hydrogeology, sedimentology, geomagnetics, and geochemistry, flexible physics labs, faculty offices, and student collaboration spaces where natural light and visual transparency put science on display.

The addition provides complementary identity through brick detailing that recalls the original building while introducing depth and texture. A cascading lobby connects the varied levels of the existing structure and surrounding topography, while tiered lecture halls are nested into the slope. Built directly over an active below-grade utility plant, the addition transforms a former constraint into improved campus connectivity.
